Squamish – the outdoor recreation capital of Canada
Located in the gorgeous natural setting of Howe Sound, Squamish is known
as the outdoor recreation capital of Canada and offers an abundance of
activities for people of all ages and skills.
The granite mountain that towers over Squamish is the Stawamus Chief
– affectionately known simply as the Chief. Climbers come in every
season to rock climb on the Chief or, in winter, to ice climb up the frozen
Shannon Falls. Mountain bikers and hikers also find breathtaking trails
on the Chief, offering spectacular views as well as a wonderful challenge.
In Coast Salish, the word Squamish means “Mother of the Winds”
- which bodes well for those who flock to Squamish Harbour for some prime
windsurfing and kiteboarding.
Other local attractions include festivals such as August's Squamish Day
celebrations and the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. The estuary draws
both casual and avid bird watchers, and Brackendale, 7 km north of Squamish,
is renowned for drawing one of the largest congregations of Bald Eagles.
About halfway between nearby Vancouver and Whistler, Squamish is a destination
in itself as well as a perfect stopping point between those two cities.
